The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks ordered by Harry S. Truman, President of the United States , against the Empire of Japan. The attacks took place on 6 and August 9, 1945.

It is estimated that by the end of 1945 , the bombs had killed 166 000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki , 4 totaling about 246 000 deaths , although only half died the day of the bombing. Among the victims , 15 to 20% died from injuries or illness attributed to radiation poisoning.

The explosion shattered the windowpanes of buildings located at a distance of 16 kilometers and could be felt up to 59 kilometers away.
The radius of total destruction was 1.6 km, causing fires in 11.4 km2. Americans they estimated that 12.1 km2 of the city were destroyed. Japanese authorities estimated that 69 % of Hiroshima 's buildings were destroyed and another 6-7 % was damaged .
